Revival of the AG Grenzmuseen – nationwide network for the culture of remembrance at the former inner-German border re-founded

The Border Museums Working Group was re-established on April 29, 2025. The aim of the nationwide, cross-state network is to exchange ideas on educational, conceptual and scientific topics. Among other things, almost all institutions are equally confronted with the challenges of historical-political education and the culture of remembrance in rural areas. Another focus is to be the bundling and supra-regional representation of common interests and concerns of the border museums to the outside world, especially against the background of the ongoing nomination process of the Green Belt as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Joint projects are also conceivable. A regular dialog is planned, including video conferences and an annual face-to-face meeting.

The AG comprises more than 20 institutions from Hof to the Rhön, the Eichsfeld and the Harz to Lübeck, which deal with the history of division and the SED dictatorship on the former inner-German border and in Berlin, commemorate its victims and provide history education as well as democracy education. These include medium-sized and large memorial sites that are run by full-time staff, as well as smaller museums and initiatives run by volunteers. Dr. Christian Stöber, director of the Schifflersgrund Border Museum, which is located on the current border between Hesse and Thuringia, was elected chairman of the working group, and Dr. Andreas Wagner, museum director of the Schlagsdorf Border House in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, was elected deputy chairman.

The working group was originally formed in 1996 and met regularly until the early 2010s. Now the network is to be filled with new life.
