Learning

Our digital educational offerings open up new and exciting perspectives on the history of the division of Germany, especially for young people. Our digital learning landscape and our podcast are suitable for preparing for and following up a visit to the memorial site, as well as for delving deeper into topics such as flight, forced resettlement, border tourism or youth in the restricted area.

All offers can also be booked as an accompanied educational program on site.

Border stories

The new 360° learning landscape “Border Stories” opens up exciting perspectives on the history of the division of Germany for secondary school pupils. In high-resolution 360° image panoramas, we convey topics such as forced resettlement, flight, border tourism and youth in the restricted area. We have prepared over 100 historical sources for this, including interviews with contemporary witnesses, historical films, documents and photographs. Source lists provide suggestions for historical research. Expert interviews and stimulating questions provide an opportunity to deepen knowledge and form personal opinions.

Our learning landscape was awarded the 2024 DigAMus-Award, making it one of the best digital projects in the museums in Germany.

Easy introduction to the story

Would you like to prepare your visit to the Schifflersgrund Border Museum with young people? Then we recommend a teaching unit with our 360° learning landscape “Border Stories”. Pupils can view one of the ten 360° learning rooms from their tablet or PC. The previous knowledge acquired through play can then be deepened during guided tours or workshops. The accompanying material for the learning landscape with many other suggestions for further research or subsequent project work can be found here:

In Border Encounters, seven young people set off on a journey along the former inner-German border with podcaster Martin Fischer and Anne Vaupel-Meier from the Schifflersgrund Border Museum. They visit historical sites, research sources and conduct fascinating interviews with contemporary witnesses. The result is ten episodes on topics such as flight, forced resettlement, border tourism and youth in the restricted area.

Searching for clues along the way

This offer is aimed specifically at children between the ages of 6 and 12 and was developed as a digital supplement to the Schifflersgrund border hiking trail. There is now also an offline version for use in the classroom.

A total of ten interactive 360° rooms around the Schifflersgrund Border Museum can be explored using smartphones or tablets. Each room contains a border story in child-friendly language. Children can also view the course of the border and look at historical pictures. If you want to solve the search tasks along the way, you will of course have to go to the real location on the border hiking trail.

The Schifflersgrund Border Museum has rental tablets that can be used as part of workshops or discovery tours.
